Support work improving the welfare of farmed animals in New Zealand

Animals Aotearoa is an NZ-based nonprofit that works to end the suffering of farmed animals, with a focus on chickens and fishes.

As part of the broader effective altruism community, they aim to make evidence-based, long-lasting changes to impact the largest number of animals. This is why Animals Aotearoa chose to focus on chickens and fishes: one in every four land animals farmed in New Zealand is a chicken bred for meat, while farmed fishes are so numerous that the aquaculture industry measures them in tonnes, rather than number of individuals.

While still a young organisation, they are already having a tangible impact. For example, their corporate policy campaigns have persuaded seven New Zealand food businesses, including HelloFresh, My Food Bag and The Coffee Club, to sign the Better Chicken Commitment, an agreement to significantly improve welfare standards for chickens bred for meat. They also work on cage-free egg campaigns as part of the Open Wing Alliance, which have resulted in global cage-free commitments from international corporations Yum! Brands, Toridoll and Jollibee.
