The Centre for the Governance of AI (GovAI) is an independent non-profit research centre based in Oxford.

GovAI was founded in 2018 by Allan Dafoe, who was then an Associate Professor at the University of Oxford. GovAI was initially a part of Oxford’s Future of Humanity Institute (FHI), before becoming an independent non-profit in 2021.

The team at GovAI believe that ensuring positive outcomes from artificial intelligence may require the development of new global norms, policies, and institutions. They aim to define and map the field of AI governance and address the most important and neglected research questions.

To that end, GovAI’s work includes:

  • Producing and publishing extensive original research. GovAI papers have been published in many leading journals, and used to advise decision-makers in government, private industry, and civil society.

  • Supporting promising early-career researchers working on AI governance through its fellowships and prizes.

  • Running seminars and conferences to better connect the field of AI governance and build a thriving global research community.

GovAI’s work is already beginning to have a widespread impact. For example, GovAI alumni have gone into policy roles in the US government, the European Union, top AI Labs (such as DeepMind and OpenAI) and think tanks such as the Center for Security and Emerging Technology.
