Help ensure food supplies are maintained in the event of disaster

The Alliance to Feed the Earth in Disasters (ALLFED) is an independent nonprofit working to develop resilient food solutions that could feed everyone in the event of a global catastrophe.

They focus on events, such as supervolcanic eruptions, which could deplete food supplies or access to 5% of the global population or more. An important aspect of this work is to establish equitable solutions, so that all people can access the nutrition they need, regardless of wealth or location. ALLFED’s ultimate goal is to feed everyone, no matter what.

With that end in mind, ALLFED’s current work includes:

  • researching the production, affordability, funding, and distribution of various resilient food solutions, including scaling up greenhouses and producing food from wood or leaves

  • working with policy experts, researchers, NGOs, industry, financial organisations, and governments to help them strengthen resilience and preparedness at national and global levels.

  • establishing flexible responses to catastrophe, including both traditional and innovative solutions

ALLFED’s work is already having a tangible impact. For example, during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, their team foresaw the potential for food insecurity, and organised a cohort of volunteers and experts to create the Food Systems Handbook. The handbook collates more than 400 resources that can help mitigate global food insecurity, and was used by individuals from dozens of NGOs, government groups, and private sector and multilateral organisations.
