Resilience to Global Catastrophes

  • E128, University of Canterbury 20 Kirkwood Avenue Christchurch (map)

Come along to the latest event hosted by EA Christchurch Universities!

Associate Professor David Denkenberger is giving a talk on his research on resilience to global catastrophes. In particular, he’ll focus on various which could block the sun, including comet impact, super volcanic eruption, and nuclear war with the burning of cities (nuclear winter). These have a combined likelihood of ~1 in 10 per century, and would lead to a near complete loss of agriculture with billions of people starving given current preparedness. Further, literature suggests that there is an ~80% chance of a 10% global agricultural shortfall this century due to minor catastrophes such as abrupt climate change or extreme weather. This could cause hundreds of millions of deaths.

David will discuss how we can build resilience to these risks, with the aim of feeding everyone no matter what. This will be a great opportunity to learn from an EA who is a leading researcher in academia!

As always, vegan snacks will be provided.
