Resilience to Catastrophes

In this free online talk, we will hear from Alliance to Feed the Earth in Disasters (ALLFED).

ALLFED seek to identify various resilient food solutions and to help governments and companies implement these solutions to feed everyone in the event of a global catastrophe. They focus on events that could deplete 5% or more of global calorie output, or access to those calories. In this talk Dr David Denkenberger and Ana Luísa Monteiro will discuss their research and what they have been working on.

The session will be held both online and in person at the University of Canterbury (Link 309 Lecture Theatre).

Intro to AI Safety

What's going on with AI? Why are some concerned? Is ensuring that future AI developments go well a good use of an altruist's time? What would that even look like in practice?

Come along to this public talk and discussion event by Zoe Williams of Rethink Priorities. Free plant-based snacks as allways. Note: we will examine some of these arguements more in depth in week 6 of the fellowship.

Stop Nando’s selling chicken suffering | Christchurch leafletting protest

Stop Nando’s selling chicken suffering | Christchurch leafletting protest

Can you spare an hour to use your power to create a better life for chickens?

Join Animals Aotearoa for an empowering and motivating hour of leafletting and peaceful protesting at Nando’s Riccarton. All placards, flyers and copies of the petition to collect signatures will be provided.

This protest is part of Animals Aotearoa’s ongoing campaign to push food businesses to sign the Better Chicken Commitment. Overseas, Nando’s takes this issue seriously and have committed to meeting much higher standards. But here in New Zealand, they are lagging behind because they think Kiwis don’t know or care about the welfare of the chickens they’re being sold.

It’s time for them to ditch the double-standards to deliver better.

Nando’s isn’t happy about the campaign against them but we’re going to keep the pressure on until they do the right thing. Together, we can create change and put an end to the worst chicken suffering.

Don't miss out on this opportunity to speak out for chickens.

Astral Codex Ten Meetup

Psychiatry, prediction contests, politics, oh my! We’re having a meetup and we’d love you to be there. Free snacks too!

Astral Codex Ten (ACX) is a popular blog written by Scott Alexander, a Psychiatrist in California. Scott is a member of Giving What We Can and frequently writes about topics relevant to effective altruism.

Twice a year, ACX meetups happen in over 80 cities around the world, from Tokyo to Berkely to Punta Cena in the Dominican Republic. This will be the inaugural Christchurch meetup (an EA Christchurch affiliated event).

Whether you’ve read 14 essays or never heard the word Astral in your life we’d love to have you along to talk about forecasting, medical drugs, artificial intelligence, research rabbit holes like why transgender people report hypermobile joints and play around with Manifold Markets and rankthings.io together. You don't need to be a student to attend either - all are welcome!

Speed Updating at the Botanic Gardens

Join us Saturday 29th April at 10am to enjoy the last of the good weather and hopefully change your mind on something!

All welcome :-)

We'll meet across the bridge from the carpark at the Botanic Gardens. If the weather is poor, we'll meet in Ilex Cafe in the middle of the Botanic Gardens instead. Zoe will be wearing an Effective Altruism t-shirt, so we should be easy to spot, but feel free to contact her on 0276067000 if you can't find us.

We'll be doing a few rounds of speed updating. There will be a list of thought-provoking questions on EA topics, which we'll each fill out our answers to. We then split into pairs and chat with each other on the questions we had the largest difference in views on. The idea is to learn something new and potentially update on some important topics! We'll rotate round pairs every 20m or so.

Looking forward to seeing you there! If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch.

Blackberries and Entrepreneurship

Join us on Saturday 11th March at 10.30am to pick blackberries, celebrate some newly launched effective charities, and discuss the landscape of entrepreneurship in Effective Altruism. All welcome! No prior knowledge needed.

We'll meet at the Sign of the Bellbird carpark at 10.30am. Both organisers have space in our cars, so let us know at 0276067000 or zoehtwilliams@gmail.com if transport is an issue and we'd be happy to pick you up on the way.

Please bring a container to put your blackberries into, a water bottle, and garden gloves if you have them (the bushes can be prickly). The top of the hill can also get chilly with wind sometimes, so bring a warm layer even if it's warm weather in the city.

Once everyone has arrived we'll wander over to a nearby area with blackberry bushes. There'll be an optional extra walk down the side of the hill where there are even more blackberries - bring good walking shoes if you're keen! Some of us will stay on the main path and chat during. We expect we'll be there a couple hours all up, but you're also welcome to head out early if you have limited time.

Looking forward to seeing you there! If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch.

Moral Weights: Discussion & Botanic Gardens Walk

Join us to learn about and discuss some awesome recent research on moral capabilities in farmed animals. All welcome! No prior knowledge needed .

We'll meet at the Botanic Gardens at 1pm, across the bridge from the carpark. I'll be wearing an Effective Altruism t-shirt so we should be easy to spot, but feel free to contact me on 0276067000 if you can't find us.

We'll spend the first 30m or so in a rundown of the research, then have Q&A and discussion over some (vegan) snacks. After that people are welcome to keep discussing in pairs or small groups as we wander through the Botanic Gardens - some of us will likely stay until 3 or 4pm. You're also welcome to head out early if you have limited time.

Looking forward to seeing you there! If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch. And if you'd like a sneak peek of the research we'll be discussing, you can take a look here.

EA Christchurch Christmas Celebration

Let's celebrate the end of the year by walking, eating, and hanging out together.

We'll have a season appropriate plant-based Christmas meal of falafel, veges, and vegan cheesecake. Extras will be potluck style - please bring along a vegan salad, drink, dessert, or side to go with. (Though if you don't have time it's 100% okay to come without!) If you have any dietary restrictions other than vegetarian / vegan, please let me know ahead of time and we'll make sure there's some options :-)

The address is 273 Fifield Terrace (Come down the long driveway to the back of the house).

4pm - We'll meet outside the driveway from 3.45 - 4pm, then walk on the hill or along the river. (Avoid arriving between 4 and 6 pm as everyone might be out walking. Message Zoe on 0276067000 to find out where we're at!)

6pm - Return to the house for eating/drinking/discussion/games!
Please be approximately accurate with clicking "going", so we buy enough ingredients.
