We're seeking an economist to conduct a comprehensive scoping report in relation to the revision of the EU's animal welfare legislation.

Eurogroup for Animals is the Brussels based European umbrella advocacy organisation, representing 103 national and international members across Europe and beyond. Together we provide a voice for the billions of animals kept in laboratories, farms and homes or living in the wild. Our vision is to build a Europe that truly cares for animals where the well-being of animals is assured and where they experience a good life. 

The purpose of Eurogroup for Animals is to drive positive change for animals by convening its members around common goals, and coordinating EU wide action to jointly influence EU law and policy making. Our advocacy work consists of dedicated programmes and a growing portfolio of projects and campaigns.

Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct a comprehensive scoping report to assess the economic data needs in relation to the revision of animal welfare legislation.

  • Identify key research gaps and areas where additional economic data is required.

  • Compile and synthesize existing data based on best practices, ensuring it is easily accessible and relevant for policymakers.

  • Identify and engage with economists who can contribute to research efforts, data compilation, and presenting findings at official meetings.

  • Collaborate with our members and relevant industries to generate the necessary economic data.

  • Assist at meeting with the institutions to present the economic case for change

Position in the organisation

The Farm Animal Welfare Economist is part of the Farm Animal team and reports to the Farm Animal Programme Leader. The Farm Animal Welfare Economist will work closely with and be supported by the Farm Animal and Political Affairs team to ensure the integration of economic arguments in our wider advocacy on animal welfare protection. 

Person specifications

  • Qualification and experience

    • Degree in economics or related fields.

    • 3 years' work experience in economic analysis, data analysis, modelling and preferably policy development, advisory roles related to animal welfare or agriculture.

    • Understanding of animal welfare policies, economic models, agriculture supply chains, and the economic dimensions of transitions, including shifting economic incentives and social and economic implications for producers and consumers.

  • Skills & abilities

    • Data analysis skills (e.g. xls, SPSS, R);

    • Data visualisation skills;

    • Strong conceptual and analytical skills;

    • Strong quantitative analysis and policy appraisal skills;

    • Strong research skills across languages and geographies;

    • Strong diplomatic, tactical and interpersonal skills;

    • Ability to pioneer new thinking, connect dots and persuade;

    • Ability to think strategically and creatively;

    • Excellent written and oral communication skills;

    • Demonstrated knowledge of economics, animal welfare, 

    • Professional approach, high standards of delivery;

    • Proactive, structured and accountable working style.
