We’re seeking a Research Project Manager to guide globally distributed AI safety research teams through our Studio and Fellowship programs targeting peer-reviewed publication. You’ll be the primary point-of-contact for these teams, providing direction, feedback, and accountability while ensuring projects stay on track.
This is a hands-on role combining direct team support with process management. You'll conduct kickoffs, review proposals and drafts, track compliance with deliverables, and connect researchers with the expertise they need. Beyond supporting individual teams, you'll refine our workflows and systems to help Apart scale effectively, balancing strong execution with strategic thinking to identify opportunities for improvement.
Core Responsibilities
Serve as primary point-of-contact for research teams throughout their project lifecycle
Conduct kickoff calls with new teams, explaining Apart processes and answering participant questions
Provide feedback on research artifacts, such as experimental writeups, research drafts, and codebases
Facilitate team connections with relevant subject matter experts
Mentor researchers through the (ML) academic publishing process, including assistance on conference and workshop cycles, rebuttals, etc.
Provide progress updates to leadership and cross-functional teams
Support literature reviews, cross-team collaboration, and new methodology development as needed
Track team compliance with, and review, weekly progress forms and deliverable deadlines
Respond to inquiries from prospective participants
Support impact tracking as research is published or receives recognition
Required Qualifications
Project management experience with multiple concurrent projects and stakeholders
Experience supporting distributed/remote teams across different time zones
Familiarity with academic publishing process (peer review, conferences, journal submissions
Strong written communication skills with ability to provide constructive, actionable feedback
Proactive problem-solver who identifies issues before they escalate
Comfortable with ambiguity and able to make sound judgment calls independently
Technical aptitude: Quick to learn new platforms and capable of understanding technical research concepts
Preferred Experience
Background in AI/ML research, engineering, or technical program management
Direct experience co-authoring academic papers or supporting research through publication
Understanding of AI safety topics (e.g. model evaluation, interpretability, cybersecurity, multi-agent systems, AI governance)
Experience mentoring or managing early-career researchers
Track record of process improvement in research or academic settings
