Researcher, Consultations

Epoch AI

📍 Remote (Global) 🕔 Full Time
💰~$100,000 USD /year ⏳ 24/10/2025

We’re hiring a remote Researcher to join our Consultations & Insights team. In this role, you’ll produce data-driven research on AI trends for governments, investors, AI companies, and other key stakeholders. You will work closely with JS Denain, one of our Senior Researchers, as we expand our external consultations program.

This role is fully remote, and we are able to hire in many countries. We invite anyone who is interested to apply, regardless of background, experience, or credentials. We provide decision-makers with rapid, authoritative analysis of AI developments. Our partners include governments, investors, AI developers, non-profits, and other organizations navigating the AI landscape.

Our work takes several forms:

  • On-demand, rapid-turnaround research where clients ask specific questions via Slack and receive analysis within a day. Queries can include: reviewing an analysis, quickly estimating a quantity, doing due diligence on some technical claim, asking for more information on previous Epoch AI work.

  • Rapid intelligence briefs analyzing major AI development, typically delivered within a few days of major releases. For example, after a model comes out, we often brief partners on whether it is off-trend in terms of capabilities or algorithmic efficiency.

  • Deep-dive research reports on strategic questions like trends in RL scaling, AI power demand, training compute, or 2030 forecasts.

  • Consultation calls: We offer 1-hour private calls where clients get targeted analysis on AI questions of their choice.

We research questions spanning the entire AI pipeline: from compute stocks and datacenter power requirements, to model capabilities and benchmark analysis, to adoption trends and economic impacts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Making estimates and forecasts based on limited information for quantities like compute resources, power supply curves, or future capabilities.

  • Responding to client questions across diverse topics - from technical details about model training to economic questions about chip production capacity.

  • Evaluating technical claims to assess whether reported benchmark scores, training costs, or algorithmic improvements are credible. For example, what should we make of a lab’s reports of achieving IMO gold, or of claims about DeepSeek-R1’s training costs.

  • Synthesizing findings into clear written analysis that translates technical details into actionable takeaways, with transparent reasoning and quantified uncertainty.

  • Drawing on Epoch's research to answer client questions, which requires developing deep familiarity with work across the organization.

  • Managing multiple workstreams with varying timelines, balancing fast-turnaround requests with longer research projects.

What we're looking for

  • Intellectual curiosity and learning speed: Ability to rapidly absorb new information across diverse domains and stay at the forefront of a fast-moving field. We're looking for someone who actively seeks out new research and enjoys diving into unfamiliar topics.

  • Estimation and forecasting skills: Comfort making quantitative estimates based on limited information, with clear reasoning about uncertainty.

  • Prior research experience in at least one part of the AI pipeline (hardware, datacenters, power, AI research, etc.).

  • Strong coding skills, especially for independently running and iterating on data analyses.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Nice to have: Prior forecasting experience, familiarity with Epoch's body of work.

  • We expect great candidates might have prior experience as analysts or researchers, but this is not a requirement.

  • If you don't tick all these boxes but think you would be a great fit, please consider applying anyway!

Compensation

Annual salary around $100,000 USD, or potentially higher for candidates with multiple years of particularly relevant experience. Salaries are not restricted to USD, and contracts and payments are usually in local currencies. Conversions are based on one-year average exchange rates.

Other Benefits

  • Fully remote environment, including flexible work hours and schedules.

  • For this role, we can support relocation and sponsor visas in the US and the UK.

  • Competitive global benefits program, including a comprehensive health insurance program with supplemental benefits specific to your local country, as available and mandated by local law, as well as life insurance and a pension plan, if applicable in your country.

  • Generous paid time off (PTO), including at least 30 days off per year, with no specific limit on paid time off per year and unlimited personal and sick leave.

  • Parental leave: up to 6 months of a combination of paid and unpaid parental leave during the first 2 years after child's birth or adoption.

  • A flexible and generous expense policy for you to spend on equipment and a large range of productivity tools or learning/development opportunities you might find valuable.

  • Paid work trips, including 3 staff retreats per year and relevant conferences.

  • Access to very well-equipped offices in Berkeley, California—including paid meals, snacks, gym, and more—or access to a similar coworking space in your location.

  • Other benefits as allowed at the discretion of Epoch AI’s leadership and local availability.

  • A supportive and energized team that is excited about the work we are doing and our mission.
