Are you excited by the prospects of working in a dynamic and important policy area that contributes to achieving New Zealand's climate mitigation goals? The Land Use and Removals team provides climate focussed policy advice to the Government on agriculture, forestry, and other carbon removals. We have an exciting Fixed Term opportunity for a Senior Policy Advisor to take a lead role in progressing some of the Government's priority work areas including:
Afforestation on Crown Land
Limiting full farm conversions registering in the NZ ETS
Agricultural climate change policy
The ideal candidate is a strong policy professional with deep policy expertise in both analysis and legislative change and experience working in multi-agency policy areas. Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
Has a solid understanding of machinery of government, strong written and oral communication skills, and breadth of experience in policy development
Ideally has knowledge/expertise in a relevant discipline eg, climate change, forestry, agriculture and carbon removals.
Ability to build and maintain relationships across work programmes and agencies to ensure appropriate, effective and integrated advice is provided to decision makers.
Skilled in writing advice for a variety of audiences, synthesising diverse information in concise written products.
Has led individual policy streams within a wider programme; capable of working autonomously while also collaborating effectively.
Experience with legislative or regulatory processes is highly desirable.
Strong attention to detail.
Skilled in mentoring and coaching less experienced team members to support uplifting the team capability.
Experience leading complex projects in high interest policy areas.
Substantial experience using a range of analytical frameworks, including developing new frameworks.
A good understanding of the split gas approach to long lived and short lived gases in the CCRA and the climate related challenges facing the food and fibre sectors would be beneficial.
