Winding up our partnership with Unlimit Health

Celebrating 9 years of impact

Our donation platform is intended to help Kiwi donors maximize the impact of their giving. With this principle in mind, we periodically review our charity partnerships on a number of criteria, including cost effectiveness, evaluator endorsements, and the availability of alternative donation options.

As part of our annual review process, we’ve made the difficult decision to wind down our partnership with Unlimit Health (formerly known as the SCI Foundation). This choice wasn’t made lightly, and several factors contributed to the decision:

  • GiveWell no longer includes any deworming programmes among their Top Charities. They have also made an exit grant to “support a smooth transition away from GiveWell funding” for Unlimit Health’s programmes in Burundi and Mauritania

  • Without GiveWell’s annual review, we don’t have the evidence base to assess Unlimit Health’s cost effectiveness going forward

  • Donations received for Unlimit Health have been trending down for the last four years, while the administrative costs of maintaining the partnership have remained relatively constant

Given these factors, we believe that winding down the partnership is the best path forward for EA NZ. We hope this change will reduce confusion about our partner charities, and help us to direct funding as cost-effectively as possible.

That said, we want to make it clear that we still see Unlimit Health as a fantastic charity that does valuable work. Several evaluators (such as The Life You Can Save and Founders Pledge) still recommend them, and there is plenty of room for reasonable disagreement. While we believe winding up the partnership is the best decision for EA NZ, individual donors may wish to continue supporting Unlimit Health directly.

What happens next?

We will continue to process both recurring and once-off donations to Unlimit Health until March 31st. From then on, donors who want to support Unlimit Health can do so directly via their website. However, please note that donations made directly to Unlimit Health are not eligible for a donation tax credit in New Zealand.

If you’d like to give tax-deductibly, another option would be to donate to Evidence Action’s Deworm the World initiative. Like Unlimit Health, Deworm the World is no longer a GiveWell Top Charity. However, we’re retaining our partnership with them for the time being, due to their connection with Evidence Action's other programmes, among other factors.

Celebrating 9 years of impact

As we wind up the partnership, we want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible things our community has achieved alongside Unlimit Health.

Over the past 9 years, EA NZ donors have given over $300,000 NZD to the programme, providing over ~170,000 children with deworming treatment. That’s enough children to fill Sky Stadium in Wellington five times over, or Auckland’s Eden Park more than three times over!

We’re immensely proud and grateful to have been a part of this work, and wish Unlimit Health all the best with their future endeavours.
