What we achieved in 2024

Our community’s million dollar impact

We hope your 2025 has been off to a great start— it's hard to believe that January is almost over already! As we begin the year in earnest, we’d like to take a moment to reflect on the amazing things our community achieved in 2024.

Over the past year, EA NZ donors gave over a million dollars to effective charities. This included funding:

  • Over 15,000 antimalarial bednets

Donors to the Against Malaria Foundation provided bednets to protect around 30,000 people from contracting malaria while they sleep for the next 2-3 years.¹ Based on calculations from GiveWell, we estimate that these nets will save over 25 lives in expectation.

  • Safe water for ~4,000 people

Through Evidence Action’s Safe Water Now programme, our donors provided thousands of people with access to either in-line chlorination or point-of-collection chlorine dispensers (pictured above) to safely treat their water.

  • Deworming for over 30,000 children

Donors to Unlimit Health and Evidence Action’s Deworm the World Initiative funded deworming treatment for tens of thousands of children, improving both their health and school performance.

  • Basic income for more than 80 people

Kenyans like Joyce (pictured above) received a universal basic income from our donors via GiveDirectly. Recipients are free to spend and invest these funds as they choose.

  • Vitamin A supplementation for over 30,000 children

Donors to Helen Keller Intl provided tens of thousands of children with life and sight-saving vitamin A supplementation. Indeed, GiveWell estimates that these supplements will save over 17 lives in expectation.

  • Cash incentives for thousands of vaccinations

Through New Incentives, caregivers like Naja’atu (pictured above with her baby, Umar) received small cash payments which helped them overcome the barriers to having their children vaccinated. Based on calculations from GiveWell, we estimate that our donors incentivised a full course of vaccination for over 350 babies, saving more than 10 lives in expectation.

  • Direct cash transfers for around 55 households

Through Give Directly, households living in extreme poverty each received $1,000 USD in unconditional cash. Eunice (pictured in above) used her transfer to install a fresh water tap for her community.

  • SMC treatment for more than 20,000 children

Donors to the Malaria Consortium provided medication to protect young children from contracting malaria during the rainy season. According to GiveWell’s analysis, these treatments will save over 30 lives in expectation.

  • Campaigns that spared ~15,000 chickens from life in a cage

Our community also stood up for animals, funding corporate campaigns via the Humane League. Based on calculations from Rethink Priorities, we estimate that these funds will improve the lives of thousands of chickens through corporate cage-free commitments.

And these are just the effects we're able to quantify! Our donors also contributed over $150,000 to safeguarding the longterm future; $19,000 to improving animal welfare; and $100,000 to building effective altruism (including supporting our operations).

These results are a fantastic reminder of how much we can achieve when we work together! We can't wait to see what you'll make possible in 2025.
