Events
We hold regular discussion groups, career events and socials, as well as bringing in speakers like David Denkenberger from ALLFED. We’re also open to suggestions, so if you have ideas for other events, please let us know!
About Us
Effective Altruism Ōtautahi/Christchurch is home to two overlapping meetup groups:
EA Christchurch Universities, for those with ties to Canterbury and Otago universities. While this group is primarily aimed at students, we also run public events which are open to anyone.
EA Christchurch City, for working professionals, or those who’ve moved on from student life. This group is largely dormant, though we still run occasional events. (Contact us if you’d be interested in reviving the group!)
Both groups are unified by a common desire to make the world a better place. This looks different for everyone: some pursue EA-aligned study paths and careers, while others look to make an impact through their donations.
Our members come from all walks of life, ranging from teenagers to retirees. Everyone is welcome, and no prior knowledge of effective altruism is required to come along to one of our events. Feel free to just show up and learn as you go— we look forward to meeting you!
Meet the Organiser
Gavin is a 5th year medical student, and the co-president of EA Christchurch Universities. He holds dual US-NZ citizenship, and also grew up in Chile.
