Join as a facilitator to help people learn about the core ideas of effective altruism. Excellent facilitators are essential to deliver a high-quality experience for participants and ultimately grow effective altruism. By facilitating, you can make an impact while improving your own knowledge.
What do we look for?
To qualify for this role, you must:
Have a strong understanding of the content for the program you want to facilitate. Read more about our programs here.
Communicate effectively in English and have reliable equipment for video calls.
Be reliable and have strong organisational skills. Participants are more likely to show up and complete their readings when facilitators coordinate effectively and show up on time consistently.
You might be a particularly good fit for the role if you:
Have subject matter expertise in areas relevant to EA
Have previous facilitation or teaching experience
Have experience with EA community building
What facilitation involves
Facilitators spend a total of 2.5 to 4 hours a week on each cohort. For whichever program you facilitate, the role involves:
Preparing for group discussions by reading the learning materials and reviewing the facilitator guide. This takes 1-3 hours a week depending on your familiarity with the content.
Facilitating the weekly discussions for your cohort of 3-8 participants. This takes 1.5 hours a week for each cohort you take on.
Supporting participants with any issues they might face and submitting attendance. Occasionally, some facilitators will do 1-1s with participants too.
Attend a training session.
Compensation
We’re trialing offering facilitators a stipend at the end of the program. The stipend amount depends on:
Whether you are an undergraduate student (e.g. Bachelor), or a professional (including postgraduates students, e.g. Masters, PhD)
Your local cost of living
The number of cohorts you facilitate (we pay more for the first cohort you facilitate, to account for prep time, and less for additional cohorts after that).
For example, a professional working in Oxford, UK would receive $847.73 for their first cohort, and $423.86 for each additional cohort after that. You can find our stipend calculator here.
We can pay facilitators in countries supported by Wise. This means we are unable to send payments to sanctioned countries.
What does the application process look like?
Filling out the application form - <30m
Completing the trial task and asynchronous interview - <40m
Completing the live interview - 20m (we usually skip this step if we have enough information)
