Lead Editor

Epoch AI

📍 Remote (Global) 🔄 Rolling Applications
💰 $90-150K USD/year 🕔 Full Time

We're seeking a Lead Editor to bring our research to a wider audience while maintaining high editorial and accessibility standards. Key responsibilities will include helping our researchers turn their research into clear and accessible outputs, as well as developing, overseeing and executing our social media and multimedia content strategy.

About the Role & Team

Note: We used to advertise for this role as "Communications Lead," but we have renamed it to emphasize the importance of AI knowledge and hands-on writing and editing skills.

Epoch AI is rapidly growing and advising key players on AI's trajectory, but our research isn't reaching all the decision-makers and public audiences it should. We're looking for an editor to help change that—someone who can sharpen and shape our messaging, expand our reach, and ensure our insights drive discussions about AI's future.

You'll be the main point person upholding communication standards at Epoch. The most important responsibilities, in order of importance, are:

  • Research editing and editorial oversight: Work with researchers to turn technical papers and analyses into blog posts, tweets, newsletters, and other formats, directly editing and writing the materials. Help researchers refine their writing and develop and maintain style guidelines, and ensure all content meets Epoch AI's high standards for technical accuracy and accessibility. Oversee supplementary copy-editing support as applicable.

  • Social media management: Develop and execute our content strategy across X, LinkedIn, and other platforms. Craft compelling posts that make our research accessible, grow our following, and establish Epoch AI as an authoritative voice in AI discussions.

  • Podcast and multimedia content: Direct the creation and promotion of video materials (e.g. podcast episodes) and other multimedia content to effectively communicate our research.

  • Media and promotion: Build and maintain relationships with journalists and content creators. Pitch our research findings to media outlets and cultivate partnerships to expand Epoch's reach and visibility. Track media mentions and coverage. Help the organization manage our public image and support the team as required for public appearances.

  • Website content: Work closely with our product designer to develop and execute our website content strategy. Collaborate on information architecture and oversee SEO efforts to ensure our research is easily discoverable by relevant audiences.

The successful candidate will report to María de la Lama, Head of Operations.

What we are looking for

The person in this role will grow our public presence by translating our technical research for a wider audience. Ideal candidates will be familiar with our research, deeply embedded in current discussions about AI development, and have multiple years of experience writing and editing in a research or scientific context. At a minimum, you should be familiar with current developments and trends in AI, and skilled at turning complex research into compelling narratives.

We think you would be a great candidate for this role if you:

  • Are skilled at and have a proven track record in communicating complex topics compellingly and effectively. This may be reflected in having grown an audience or owned communication in a research or scientific context.

  • Have exceptional writing skills, with a demonstrated ability to grasp complex technical concepts, make them accessible to different audiences, and communicate about them in an engaging way.

  • Are deeply embedded in current discussions about the development of AI, and are familiar with Epoch's research focus on empirically tracking and forecasting AI progress (e.g., you can explain our key research contributions and how they fit into the broader AI landscape).

  • Have an ownership mindset—you can drive high-level planning while also being comfortable with hands-on execution, obsessing over every detail and taking initiative to do whatever is needed for impact. This includes having creative problem-solving skills and a growth mindset for trying new approaches and channels.

  • Can maintain 3 or more hours of overlap with UTC–8 (Pacific Time) work hours, as most of our staff work in this time zone.

What We Offer

Compensation

  • Annual salary between $80,000 and $110,000 USD, pro-rated by contract length.

  • Salaries are not restricted to USD, and contracts and payments are usually in local currencies. Conversions from USD are based on a 1-year-average exchange rate that is updated in contracts annually.

Other Benefits

  • Fully remote environment, including flexible work hours and schedules

  • We are willing and able to sponsor visas to the US or the UK for this role, though the ultimate viability and success of an application are out of our control.

  • Competitive global benefits program, including:

    • Comprehensive health insurance program, including supplemental benefits specific to a local country, as available and mandated by local law.

    • Life insurance and pension plan, if applicable in your country.

  • Generous paid time off (PTO) leave, including:

    • We don’t set a specific limit on paid time off per year, and protect a minimum of 30 days off per year (including public local holidays and vacation time), pro-rated by contract length.

    • Unlimited (within reason) personal and sick leave

    • Parental leave - up to 6 months of a combination of paid and unpaid parental leave during the first 2 years after child's birth or adoption, for permanent staff.

  • A flexible and generous expense policy for you to spend on equipment and a large range of productivity tools or learning/development opportunities you might find valuable, subject to regulations and manager approval.

  • Paid work trips, including 3 staff retreats per year and relevant conferences.

  • A supportive team who is excited about the work we are doing and is aligned with our mission.

  • Other benefits as allowed at the discretion of Epoch’s leadership and local availability.

Additional Information

  • Please email careers@epoch.ai if you have any questions about this role, accessibility requests, or if want to request an extension to the deadline.

  • While we welcome applicants from all time zones, we prefer candidates who can maintain significant overlap with UTC–8 (Pacific Time), as most of our staff work in this time zone.

  • Please submit all of your application materials in English and note that we require professional level English proficiency.

  • For this position we prefer candidates who can travel: we hold three retreats per year, during which we record podcast episodes and coordinate other communication efforts.

  • Epoch is committed to building an inclusive, equitable, and supportive community for you to thrive and do your best work. We’re committed to finding the best people for our team, so please don’t hesitate to apply for a role regardless of your age, gender identity/expression, political identity, personal preferences, physical abilities, veteran status, neurodiversity or any other background.
