Malengo is hiring a Chief Investment Officer (CIO) to lead the organization’s overall investment strategy and financial performance. This senior executive will shape our financial vision, oversee fund structuring, and lead engagement with mission-aligned investors. Key responsibilities include structuring income-sharing agreements (ISAs), analyzing portfolio performance, forecasting long-term sustainability, and developing impact models that inform both strategic decision-making and fundraising. The CIO will serve as a core partner to the CEO and Board, provide strategic oversight of the Compliance & Legal and Financial Planning & Accounting functions, and play a pivotal role in Malengo’s fundraising strategy.

The ideal candidate brings deep experience in lending or investment management, advanced financial modeling capabilities, familiarity with impact finance structures, and a strong ability to articulate value to philanthropic and impact-focused capital partners.

Key Responsibilities

Investment Portfolio Strategy & Execution

  • Design and oversee the financial and legal structuring of ISA vehicles and investment funds to enable investor participation.

  • Refine and manage financial models to forecast ISA performance, investor returns, and long-term sustainability across cohorts and markets.

  • Define and set contractual terms for ISAs, including repayment parameters and risk assumptions.

  • Monitor ISA portfolio performance through dashboards and scenario modeling to inform strategy and ensure program cash flow integrity.

  • Partner with Program and Finance teams to optimize disbursements, repayments, and delinquency management across the ISA lifecycle.

Financial & Organizational Leadership

  • Lead the internal finance team, including hiring, performance management, and professional development.

  • Oversee legal, compliance, and regulatory matters related to ISA contracts, international flows, and grants.

  • Manage relationships with external legal, audit, and compliance partners to maintain financial integrity.

  • Serve on the executive team and contribute to overall organizational strategy, risk management, and impact scaling.

Budgeting, Grants & Financial Oversight

  • Co-lead the development and management of annual budgets, forecasts, and grant-specific financial planning.

  • Ensure alignment between strategic financial models and operational budgeting.

  • Oversee financial reporting, audits, and internal controls to meet regulatory and grantor requirements.

  • Own overall organizational financial performance and accountability.

Fundraising & Capital Strategy

  • Collaborate with Finance & Operations to develop and manage annual budgets and grant-specific financials.

  • Provide forecasting and modeling support for grant applications and funder reports.

  • Ensure integration between operational budgeting and long-term program models.

  • Oversee executional finance functions including budgeting, accounting systems, and internal controls, ensuring consistency between strategic and operational financial practices.

  • Lead and supervise financial reporting and audit processes, ensuring compliance with grantor requirements and regulatory standards.

  • Take full responsibility for organization-wide financial performance, not just programmatic modeling, ensuring alignment between strategic planning and fiscal accountability.

Fundraising & Capital Strategy

  • Partner with the CEO to lead investor and funder engagement, including financial storytelling and impact modeling.

  • Develop and present clear, data-driven financial materials and sustainability projections for funders, investors, and the Board.

  • Maintain tailored financial dashboards and reports to support ongoing capital strategy and fundraising efforts.

Qualifications

  Required

  • 10+ years of experience in strategic finance, impact investing, education finance, or nonprofit financial leadership.

  • Proven experience in operational leadership at a lending or investment organization, ideally as a senior executive in a high-accountability environment
