Careers Adviser
Animal Advocacy Careers
📍 Remote (Global) 🕔 Part Time
🔄 Rolling Applications
We’re looking for a career advisor to join our team and talk one-on-one to talented, altruistic applicants to help them find high-impact careers. Career advising is one of our most promising programs, and we are now at the stage where we are looking to expand and enhance this program with a dedicated advisor.
About Animal Advocacy Careers
Animal Advocacy Careers is an organization that speeds up the end of animal suffering by matching people to roles and opportunities that help animals the most. Many billions of animals are kept in appalling conditions; we provide career services for individuals and organizations seeking to help them.
Services that we offer include an online course, a job board, 1:1 career advising, giving for animals, and a talent matching database. Our cautious estimate is that we have helped over 105 people land high-impact positions who wouldn’t have otherwise, and added value of >$2,500,000 to the movement through these positions.
You can learn more about our organization & values here and our team here.
We have recently taken part in the “Inclusive Hiring Skills Programme” and have incorporated best practices into our process. We hope that it will provide a great candidate experience, but we always welcome feedback! You can submit it anonymously via this form. If something deterred you from applying, we’d also like to hear about it.
Practicalities
Location: Remote. Most countries and time zones are workable but for this role we have a preference for US, European or UK candidates due to the business travel requirement.
Terms of Employment: part-time independent contractor, 25 hours per week, 12 month fixed-term contract.
3 month probationary period
We expect to renew the contract if the role meets your needs and ours and you perform well.
Pay: $21,600 per year for approximately 0.6 FTE (25 hours per week)
AAC doesn’t negotiate pay rates and has a location-independent salary and contractor fee policy.
Reports to: Lauren Mee, CEO
Start: As soon as possible after the hiring process is complete and the candidate is available.
We will offer general feedback to all candidates if they aren’t selected. We may offer more detailed feedback after the test tasks.
We will send all unsuccessful candidates further resources to help with their job search. If you make it to the interview stage, we may refer your candidacy to other organizations in the movement with your permission.
Thanks for your interest in working with us to help animals! We will host an optional Q&A session about this role on 20th November, Tuesday, 6 pm GMT. Click this link to register. You can also add the event to your Google Calendar through this link.
This webinar will be recorded and we’ll add it to this job description after it finishes.

Possess expertise in analyzing data to identify trends and improve our services
For example, design career pathways for specific common candidate skills and their top 3 career paths.

Demonstrate strong writing skills to create engaging posts that add value to our target audience and help attract them to our career coaching.
Maintain up-to-date data records of who you are coaching and identify any patterns that can help refine our process further.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
We’re looking for someone who has:
A strong interest in effective altruism and animal advocacy
A deep interest in understanding people, and the ability to be supportive and kind when discussing sensitive issues
A high social budget, and would enjoy having a lot of one-on-one conversations via video call
The ability and desire to rapidly learn and follow developments in the talent needs of our movement and the movement more holistically
Excellent professional communication and social skills, both verbal and written
Strong analytical skills, and would enjoy puzzling out the key considerations for a complex problem
Strong presentation skills with the willingness to travel for work
Previous experience in farmed animal advocacy would be a significant advantage in the role, but we encourage you to apply even without that.
You don’t have to have any particular previous experience to qualify for this role. We can imagine a wide array of experience types that might increase our confidence in your ability to perform the role to a high standard in rough priority order, e.g. if you’ve enjoyed managing, mentoring, or teaching or community building, experience with coaching is not necessary.
Additionally, it is sometimes said that men tend to apply for jobs when they meet only some of a job’s criteria, while women and other marginalized groups are less likely to apply if they are not a 100% match. If you are passionate about AAC’s mission and think you have what it takes to be successful in this, please apply even if you don’t check all the boxes. We’d appreciate the opportunity to consider your application.
Benefits to You

We will not control what hours you work or how you work. We will agree on due dates with you and expect you to adhere to them.
We have monthly all-staff meetings, weekly 1:1 check-ins with managers, and additional meetings as needed. Outside of these meetings, we do not have a lot of opportunities for socializing with team members.
Fully remote work environment and team
Generous and flexible self-managed time off policy
Optional 2 days of direct volunteering work e.g. at a sanctuary, protest, or self-care days
1-month paid sabbatical after every 3 years
Encouragement and support to spend at least 5% of paid time on training and development and a $500 professional development surcharge budget
A clear compensation policy with opportunities for promotion annually
