Both EA and CEA are at important inflection points. Public awareness of EA has grown significantly, and EA has had both major success and significant controversies. To match this growth in awareness, we're looking to increase our capacity to inform public narratives and contribute to a more accurate understanding of EA ideas and impact. The stakes are high: Success could result in significantly higher engagement with EA ideas, leading to career changes, donations, new projects, and increased traction in a range of fields. Failure could result in long-lasting damage to the brand, the ideas, and the people who have historically associated with them. We're interested in growing our communications team to meet these challenges.
In the media specialist role, you will lead CEA’s media engagement strategy. With the support of both internal and external stakeholders, you will help steward effective altruism’s media presence and shape the story of our impact.
Key Responsibilities
Media Strategy and Outreach: you’ll lead proactive media engagement by identifying and pursuing strategic opportunities for media coverage. You will help shape public discourse around effective altruism through targeted media pitching and relationship building.
Press Management: you’ll handle incoming press inquiries and media requests. You will also develop and maintain a comprehensive media kit and press materials.
Proactive Relationship Development: you’ll identify and develop relationships with journalists and other media contacts. You’ll also build your network within the EA community and identify potential spokespeople for EA ideas in the media.
Media Training and Support: you’ll serve as a trusted media resource and advisor for key stakeholders, both inside CEA and at other organizations in the broader EA community.
What we’re looking for
Media expertise: you bring deep expertise in journalism and media. You also bring a strong network of journalists who you can reach out to when pitching stories.
Adaptability: our communications function is still in its early stages, and we expect the team to change over time. We’re looking for someone who is excited to help scope the function and adapt as the team grows.
Stakeholder management: this is a cross-functional role that will require engagement with stakeholders both inside and outside of CEA. You’ll need to build trust and quickly develop context on the ecosystem.
Storytelling ability: you are an expert storyteller who can determine what is newsworthy and craft a compelling narrative around it.
Compelling communications: you understand how to effectively connect with a wide range of different audiences.
An understanding of our work: you have a strong understanding of EA and associated ideas, or demonstrate an interest in quickly learning more.
