Project Manager

Good Impressions

📍Remote (Global) 🕔 Part Time or Full Time
⌛ 24/11/2024 💰 $50-$80,000

We’re looking for strong generalists that can lead the following process from beginning to end, with support from our team:

  • Meeting with the client to thoroughly understand their goals

  • Working with the Good Impressions team to develop a digital marketing strategy to achieve those goals

  • Implementing the campaigns

  • Monitoring and optimizing the campaigns

  • Reporting on campaign results

Note that experience with digital marketing is not necessary as it is learnable, we have experts on staff, and our team will teach you as you go!

As a generalist, why should I care about digital marketing?

Effective nonprofits invest lots of time and resources into building impactful projects, but very few of those nonprofits have experience getting the right people to engage with those projects. This means that fellowships, courses, and advising services are often undersubscribed; articles, reports, books, magazines, videos, and films are often undiscovered by key stakeholders; webinars and workshops miss out on high-value attendees; apps, tools, and services remain underused; and grants or contests receive fewer submissions than they could.

Our theory of change is to “top up” the impact of these nonprofits by helping them get as much value as possible out of projects they’ve already created.

Some of our results:

  • Increased the number of accepted applications for a fellowship by ~40%

  • Increased the rate at which site visitors applied for a service ~8x by redesigning the application page

  • Increased the readership of a magazine by ~80%

  • Increased the social media following of a research organization by ~3x

  • Recruited 7 whistleblowers for an animal welfare nonprofit at 1% of the cost of undercover investigations

  • Recruited 14 new chapter leaders for a university program that otherwise may have shut down

  • Drove ~1,000,000 users to the sites of effective nonprofits at no cost using the Google Ads Grant

  • Sold 2,000 copies of a book at break-even advertising costs

  • Improved the Google Search results for an important search term

What you should have

This role does not require experience with digital marketing (this is because we believe it is very learnable and we will teach you!)

Requirements for the role include:

  • Knack for understanding what is important

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new skills and tools

  • Ownership: Taking initiative to drive results, proactively identifying issues and solutions, resourcefully solving problems, voicing concerns unaddressed by the team

  • Project management: Autonomously planning and executing tasks, managing resources and timelines, maintaining both a “zoomed out” understanding of a project while addressing details that require you to be “zoomed in”

  • Communication: Clear and concise communication that demonstrates reasoning transparency

  • An eagerness to receive and act on feedback

  • Familiarity with Effective Altruism

Strong candidates may also have experience with some of the following:

  • Client services

  • Entrepreneurship

  • Consulting

  • One of the marketing or communications specialties listed here

  • Working at an Effective Altruism organization

Reasons to work at Good Impressions

  • Work with a great team:

    • "I honestly cannot imagine working in a more positive culture"

    • “I'm always very grateful to work so closely with such a great mentor and recommend all my jobseeking friends to find something where they can have this dynamic :) ”

    • “Lovely work environment (checks all of 80k's boxes for me), and clients really like us!”

  • Opportunity for Growth:

    • Good Impressions has started receiving requests to support important causes beyond our current service offering. These activities could include becoming a one-stop-shop for nonprofit communications, acting in a PR capacity for public intellectuals,  or producing podcasts or video content. As we expand into these activities we will require team members to take leadership positions in order to increase our capacity.

  • Measureable and quantifiable impact:

    • We’re often able to directly measure the impact of our work. This provides for very fast feedback loops and is generally very rewarding!

  • High autonomy:

    • The aim is to support Project Managers to run their own projects, as opposed to dictating each step.

  • Opportunity to work on more than one pressing world problem:

    • We help organizations working on AI safety, biosecurity, farmed animal welfare, extreme poverty, and building the Effective Altruism community.

  • Mix of qualitative and quantitative work:

    • Good Impressions Project Managers have to deal with questions like “what is the most creative way to represent the findings in this PPE report” as well as questions like “how much money should we spend on the academic audience given the efficiency of other audiences?”

  • Work life balance

    • We set our own deadlines and take mental health and burnout seriously.

Additional Information

  • Part-time and full-time options are available.

  • Employment Status: Part-time roles will be contractor positions.

  • Compensation: $50,000 - $80,000 for full time roles. Part time roles will be prorated to your hours. We are willing to offer higher compensation for exceptional candidates.

  • Benefits: For full-time roles, benefits will include private health insurance and flexible work hours. There are no benefits for part-time (contractor) positions.

  • Location: Remote.

  • Time Zone: Must be able to meet with clients and team members based in California and UK time zones
